Winchester & District Ladies Circle No 18 – 60th Anniversary

Indian rock pythons, pins and elephants – what do these things have in common? If you know the answer, you were probably at Winchester & District Ladies Circle’s 60th Anniversary Luncheon on Saturday 9th February 2008!

In the beautiful, high-ceilinged splendour of the historical Winchester Guildhall, almost 70 past, present and prospective Circlers came together to celebrate this happy occasion in a truly memorable way.

At the start of the afternoon, a cheque for ₤2000 was presented to Mr Paul Glover of the Joe Glover Trust, a local children’s cancer trust, and one of 3 charities that Winchester is supporting this year. The money was raised at a Film Evening in December for ‘The Golden Compass’ where the highlight of the pre-film drinks reception had been an exciting auction of a framed poster, signed by Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman and all the supporting cast members of the film.

The Luncheon’s Master of Ceremonies was the current Chairman of Winchester’s Round Table, William Martin, who was an excellent Master of Ceremonies. He broke into Gilbert & Sullivan as he introduced the speaker, Mr Richard Furnival–Jones, who had spent 40 years at Harrods and gave a very interesting and humorous account of his time there.

Sally Reed, former Chairman 1965-1966, was invited to light the Candle of Friendship as the most senior Chairman present. Another special guest was Naomi Hickey, National Secretary who gave a delightful and moving speech about friendship.

Special Guests

During the delicious 3 course meal, Roll Calls of Past Chairs, Circles present, and current Winchester Circlers were read, as well as messages of goodwill and congratulations. A celebratory cake was then cut and served with tea and coffee.

Winchester Circlers, and especially organizers Donna Brien and Audrey Gordon, were delighted at the turnout by past Circlers and Tangent members, and also by the support shown by the presence of Circlers from Haslemere, and Eastleigh & Chandler’s Ford. Prospective Circlers present at the event felt they had been given a unique and positive opportunity to see Fun, Friendship and Fund-raising in action.

The afternoon whizzed by in happy chatter and laughter, many photographs were taken, and at the end, everyone took home a goody bag filled with several items to mark the day.

And in answer to the question posed at the beginning of this article – Three things that have been sold by Harrods, two of which have been seen in the basement of the store…we will leave you to guess which ones they were!
