CREATING A WEBSITE

So you want to set up your own website? It's difficult to give very
general advice, because so much depends on your set-up at home. But
with a little perseverance, it needn't be a job for an expert.
There are three steps involved:
- First, design and create your site. You can create something
straightforward using a package such as Microsoft Publisher, or
Microsoft FrontPage Express (which often comes free when you sign up
with an Internet Service Provider), or you can aim for something
more whizzy if you go for Microsoft FrontPage, Claris HomePage or HotMetal. Of
course, there's always the good old text editor and html....
- Then, publish it on to the Internet, using say Microsoft's Web
Publishing Wizard, or an FTP package (contact your Internet Service
Provider for more help with this).
- Finally, once your site's up and running, tell us what your URL is,
either by email or any of the other contact methods, and we'll do the rest!
Are there any costs involved?
Yes and no! It really depends on whether you are already
signed up with an Internet Service Provider (e.g. Tesco, freeserve,
AOL, btinternet, etc.). If you are, then you will usually have
access to free web space (space on their computer to store your web pages
on). If not, then the only costs involved are in setting up your
connection (lots are free these days). Many ISPs carry advice on
their websites about setting up your own web pages.
