Winchester Circlers with Charlie Crocker on BBC Radio Solent Winchester Circlers had a unique experience on Thursday 6th August when they took part in a live radio broadcast with Charlie Crocker on BBC Radio Solent. It was part of a new series called ‘Charlie’s Social’ where women’s groups are invited in to talk about their activities, chat about news stories of the day and comment on topics being discussed with other guests.“It was such an amazing afternoon! We always talk about how Circle offers you the opportunity to do something you may not otherwise get to do, and here is a perfect example. None of us had ever been on a live Radio show before!” said Jo Woodland, who is Chairman this year. “Charlie and her producer quickly put us at ease,” she added, “and before we knew it, we were live on air, chatting about our activities and events, why we had joined Circle and what we felt we enjoyed most from being Circlers.” The group also discussed a news story about a TUC debate on potentially banning high heels from the workplace. Katie Bale, a Circler who works in Health and Safety, thought it unlikely that the debate would lead to an outright ban as it would be an infringement of personal rights. However she felt there was a serious underlying issue at the centre of the debate. Another Circler, Jill Lawrence added that it should be left to women themselves to choose appropriate footwear for the type of employment in which they are engaged. Before long, the discussion had evolved into a light-hearted argument for the importance of shoes and handbags! Charlie also had controversial Kim and Aggie from the TV Series ‘How Clean is Your House?’ on the show, talking about men who need to clean and help more around the house, and blaming mothers for not teaching their sons to clean! Circlers were invited to comment and had plenty to contribute on the topic, from examples of men who would not do housework for the most spurious of excuses such as not liking the noise from the vacuum machine, to men who iron their own shirts because they know best how to do it! Circlers Jo Woodland and Sunita Martin roundly denied Kim and Aggie’s blame on mothers and confirmed that their children, both boys and girls, help in household chores because teaching them these life skills is important for their preparation to become independent individuals later.
